reactjs - what are the differences in the downstream effects between these 2 different imports?

I'm working on an app and a previous developer imported React into a component like this:

import * as React from 'react';

I'm working on a new component so I just used "rcc" to auto-gen a basic component structure which auto-created the React import like this:

import React, { Component } from 'react';

I know that the auto-generated import in the second example above is better b/c it's more specific. However, what are the differences in the downstream effects between these 2 different imports? The first example imports everything from React instead of simply React and Component but can you paint a more descriptive picture of what that looks like in the browser? For example, can I go to CDT or use some other tool to see that some relevant file size is larger or that import * causes the page to require a few more ms to load?
